Singapore’s pioneer generation, who helped build up Singapore into what it is today, will enjoy a special Pioneer Generation Package, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced on his Facebook page on Sunday.
"To thank this special generation…the Package helps our pioneers with their healthcare needs. It will reduce their medical expenses, let them save more for other needs, and lighten the burden on their children too,” he wrote.
Lee also made the announcement on Sunday at the Istana in front of 1,000 Singaporeans who represented the generation, Channel NewsAsia reported.
The report also stated that Singaporeans born before 1949 and who became citizens before 1987 will be eligible for the package.
Their premiums for MediShield Life will be “kept affordable” and there will also be help for outpatient bills with subsidies at polyclinics, specialist outpatient clinics and general practitioners under the Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS).
There will be further money top-ups to their Medisave accounts annually to help with other general medical needs.
The full details of the package will be announced on 21 February 2014 by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
Lee said: "Let us build on our pioneers’ legacy and maintain their never-say-die spirit, and take Singapore to greater heights in the next 50 years."
